Borno solicits support for Boko Haram victims Read More

Hajiya Mairo Bunu, the Borno Accountant-General, on Monday appealed to donor agencies to mobilise support for the rehabilitation of victims of Boko Haram insurgency in the state.

Bunu made the appeal when she presented some relief materials to Gov. Kashim Shettima for the victims.

She said the Boko Haram insurgency had resulted in mass destruction of infrastructure which might be difficult to rebuild without the support of the international community.

“The insurgency has indeed led to mass killings and destruction all over the state. Borno requires lots of assistance to be able to restore the structure destroyed by the insurgents.

“We are appealing to members of the international community including donor organisations to come forward and lend a helping hand,” Bunu said.

She said her gesture was aimed at encouraging donation from wealthy individuals and organisations for the upkeep of the insurgency victims.

“You can see that we have numerous Internally Displaced Persons camps all over Maiduguri.

“The state government has been trying to cater for them within its limited resources,” Bunu said.

She added that the state would require enormous resources to resettle the IDPs.

“We acknowledge the efforts of the Federal Government in setting up the Victims Support Fund for insurgency victims.

“But a lot still need to be done in ensuring the comfort of the displaced persons that is why we are appealing for support from all angles,” she said.

Shettima thanked her for the donation and promised judicious use of the items.

Items donated included 500 bags of rice, 500 bags of maize powder, 500 T-shirts, 500 local wax and 500 guinea wax.
