Lovers Drown in Delta

News reaching us has it that two suspected young lovers were yesterday feared drowned in Ekpan River at the New Layout in Ekpan area of Effurun, Uvwie Local Government Area of Delta State.

The incident occurred at 2pm.

Eyewitnesses said the boy, identified simply as Kess, took his  friend, Onoriode, to the creek to cool off.

We gathered that the young lovers were said to be between 16 and 17 years.

A resident, who did not want to be named, told our reporter how the

young lovers drowned: “We saw them strolling to the waterside, holding hands. When they got there, the boy decided to swim but the girl said she wasn’t in the mood.

“But a few minutes later, the boy was able to convince the girl to join him in the murky, hyacinth-covered water.”

They disappeared shortly after entering the water.

Local divers were combing the river for the bodies of the youths last night.

When our reporter visited the scene at 3pm, two pairs of male and female slippers were found at the river bank. Their parents, siblings and friends were seen wailing over the tragedy.
