Army Captain Impostor Arrested

News has it that A man, George Edem, was yesterday paraded by the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation and Special Offences Unit (Task Force) for allegedly posing as an army captain.

Edem, who claimed to be residing at Flat 11, Block 2, Intelligent Quarters, Nigerian Army Cantonment in Ojo, Lagos was said to have harassed some policemen and paramilitary officers attached to the task force.

Edem came for the release of a motorcycle seized at Oshodi yesterday by the task force. He sought to see the task force chairman, Saheed Egbeyemi, to

facilitate the motorcycle’s release.

After listening to his plea, Egbeyemi questioned him on his claim to be an army captain and found that he is just an engineer and not an army officer.

Edem, who did not know that the agency does not release impounded motorcycles, came for the release of a BOXER motorcycle with chassis number MD2A18AZ3FMW34913X impounded for contravening the Lagos State Road Traffic Laws of 2012.

He was found with fake army identity card.

The task force quoted him as saying that poverty led him to pose as an army captain, collecting money from people with cases with the Police and Nigerian Customs Service to help them.

Edem claimed to have deceived many Divisional Police Officers (DPOs).

“The Lagos State Task Force hereby enjoins the public to be wary of fake security personnel who are operating illegally by perpetuating evil and duping innocent citizens of their hard earned resources”, a statement by the task force Public Relations Officer Taofiq Adebayo warned.

Also yesterday, the agency said it had in the last one week impounded 114 motorcycles.

Seventy-one, it said, were screened-out of the 269 miscreants arrested; 198 were charged to court for environmental offences.
