Latest news the Alleged wife-killer Lekan Shonde yesterday told an Ebute Metta Chief Magistrates’ Court,Lagos  that he did not kill Ronke as claimed by the police.

The police slammed dockworker Shonde  with temporary charge D/30/2016 which reads: “That you Shonde Olalekan, on May 5, 2016, at about 2030 hours at No. 3, Tiemo Street, Egbeda, in the Lagos Magisterial District, did kill one Ronke Shonde, ‘F’ age 37, by giving her fist blow on her head, and

thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 221 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.”

He was charged before Chief Magistrate O. A. Adelaja.

The accused  who was brought to the court premises at about  11:30 am.

He wore  a black T-shirt atop a pair of cream coloured combat shorts.

Asked if he understood the charge, Shonde asked for the last paragraph to be re-read, after which he replied: “I didn’t kill her.”

Prosecuting counsel Inspector Chinalu Uwadione asked the court to  remand the accused  in prison custody “to enable us send the case to the Lagos State Directorate of Public Prosecution (DPP) for legal advice.”

This was not opposed by defence counsel Mr. I. V. Mohammed, and Chief Magistrate Adelaja thus upheld Uwadione’s prayer.

He said:”The offence is a capital offence and the defendant is to be remanded in prison custody pursuant to Section 264 (1) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Law ((ACJL) 2011.

“The prosecutor should forward the case file to the DPP’s advice. The case is adjourned till June 24, 2016,” the court held.

On Wednesday, The Nation learnt that an autopsy conducted on Mrs. Shonde at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Ikeja, said she  died of “respiratory seizure.”

Meanwhile, the remains of the ex- banker was yesterday buried at Atan cemetery, Yaba,  amid tears by friends and family members .

Sympathizers wailed uncontrollably while her body was being lowered into the grave.

Her body was conveyed to the cemetery in a hired hearse which left the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital morgue at about 2pm.

The burial which was kept secret, The Nation learnt was witnessed by only close family members and friends of the deceased.

It was learnt that a Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) pastor conducted a brief sermon that lasted about five minutes.

The deceased’s relatives who expressed their displeasure at the result of autopsy carried out on the deceased demanded that justice be served on her alleged killer.

“Honestly, justice should be served because her children have been deprived of the joy of having a mother.  But when they grow up and understand what deprived them of that joy, they will be comforted that justice was done. I believe that this the only thing that will soothe them in years to come,” said one of her family members.
