Here is the current news update from mynation news as the two-week old registration
exercise for the 2017/2018 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination
(UTME), has seen candidates experience set-back in the registration
process due to many issues that the Board failed to address.
Some candidates that wanted to register for the Joint
Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) examination recently decried
the poor internet services in the JAMB accredited Computer Based Test
(CBT) centres and the number of manpower attending to them where the
registration is being done in the state.
Report gathered as the candidates told MYNATION NEWS that since the
registration started on March, 20, they had not been able to log into
the JAMB’s website.
Narrating her ordeal, Ngozika Agatha said that after each
candidate had paid N6,200 for the examination form to the bank and
creating an e-mail address and JAMB profile, they were still unable to
get a personal identification number (PIN) owing to poor internet
services.
“I had been visiting JAMB’s office alongside my friends
who had same problem. The staff of the examination body had been telling
us to come back” she said.
She appealed to JAMB’s management to find a lasting
solution to the internet problem and employ more hands to carry out the
registration exercise to enable them register within the scheduled
period
Another candidate, Chiamaka Ozonna, said that her
experience in the UTME registration process this year had been stressful
and tiring. She said that JAMB accredited CBT centres have failed to
give a satisfactory services.
“My friends and I have been in the sun and on the queue
for hours without achieving anything regarding the registration. The
internet connectivity has really caused a problem for us and we just
pray that the poor network will be solved in due time,’’ she said.
Still, another candidate, Precious Ani, had this to say:
“I have been in Afri-Hub, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, since morning
for my UTME registration and I have not been attended to; this is
because they have only two persons attending to us and, as you can see,
there are plenty of candidates queuing for the registration exercise.
“They are just telling us that the server is slow and that we should be patient”, she said.
Other candidates who also spoke with MYNATION NEWS
expressed their dissatisfaction with the poor internet service and
cumbersomeness of the whole process.
They all called for urgent steps to rectify JAMB portals
connectivity as well as involving more staff in the exercise to ensure
smooth and quick registration for the examination in due course.
Most cyber cafe that previously did the registration
exercise are not accredited this time, making the number of thus
limiting the students’ access to the service..
When MYNATION NEWS visited
cyber cafés like Cisco computers, Campus Café, and De Intact-Maco World
Nigeria Ltd; they all stated that they were yet to commence the
registration exercise largely because they have not received the
password to JAMB’s website.
Reacting, the Principal Administration Officer of JAMB,
Anambra State branch, Mrs. Angela Okonkwo, when contacted for
clarifications on the poor internet connectivity and the resultant
inconvenience to the candidates, disagreed with some of what the
candidates said.
Acccording to her, “Everything is moving smoothly and
although, there is a large number of candidates on the queue, the
management and staff are attending to them. The board has been working
effortlessly to restore normalcy.
“Yes, we initially had network connectivity issue at the
start of the registration exercise but that has been solved and we are
very optimistic that all candidates seeking registration for the
2017/2018 UTME must be registered before the closing date being 19th of
April, 2017”, she stated.
When it was brought to her notice that the candidates were
clamouring for reversion to the old system of registration, Mrs.
Okonkwo has this to say, “The problem with the candidates is that they
lack patience. The new system is efficient and reliable. It has helped
to eliminate fraud perpetrated by roadside cyber cafés thus, ensuring
accountability”.
There were 28 JAMB accredited CBT centres in Anambra state for the 2017/2018 registration exercise, Okonkwo disclosed.
