News As Lagos Lawyer's Secretary Bolts With N118,000

 
 
Legal news update reaching us has it that A Lagos lawyer’s secretary, Gbenga Akindele, who allegedly bolted with his employer’s N118, 000, was on Wednesday charged before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court. The 21-year-old, who lives at No. 10, Oyewole St., Mulero Bus Stop, Agege in Lagos, is facing a charge of stealing.

We Will Strive To Make Nigeria Accept Gay Rights- US

As President Muhammadu Buhari prepares to meet with his United States colleague, Barack Obama, in the White House next Monday, the US government is expected to make another case asking the Nigerian government to repeal its law against same-sex unions.

Making this known, the US Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, stated that the US would continue to pressure Nigeria until it legalises same-sex marriage.

Nigerian court sacks Maigari and NFF Congress

The Nigeria Football Federation board headed by Aminu Maigari has been sacked by a Plateau state high court on Thursday.

The court granted an Order of Interlocutory Injunction restraining the president of the NFF, the executive committee members as well as the NFF Congress from running affairs of Nigerian football pending the determination of the Motion on Notice before the court.

In granting the order, Justice P.L. Lot also ordered a mandatory injunction compelling the 4th defendant (Minister of Sports) to appoint a senior members of the civil service in the NFF command to command, control and manage the affairs of  Nigeria football.

Following this order, the minister of sports and chairman National Sports Commission Dr. Tammy Danagogo has appointed Lawrence Longyir Katken as acting Secretary General of the Nigeria Football Federation.

In a letter personally signed by the minister to Katken he said;

"Further to suit No. PLD/J 342/2014 and an order of mandatory injunction, issuing from Hon. Justice PL Lot...you  (Lawrence Katiken) are hereby directed to act as Secretary General of the NFF, and to take over the full management of the NFF.

"You are to hold this position pending the hearing and determination of the Motion on Notice in the referenced suit".

The owner of Nembe FC, Mrs Ebiakpo Rumson Baribote had through her filed a suit asking  the  court to grant an Order of Interim Injunction restraining the Aminu Maigari and all the committee and congress of the Nigeria Football Federation from managing the affairs of football matters in Nigeria.

Protests as FG drops charges against Mohammed Abacha


Protests on Wednesday greeted the Federal Government’s withdrawal of the N446.3bn theft charge it instituted against Mohammed Abacha, son of a former Head of State, the late Gen. Sani Abacha.

Those who flayed the action which took place at the Federal Capital Territory High Court, Abuja, were prominent Lagos lawyers – Femi Falana, Jiti Ogunye, Fred Agbaje and Femi Aborisade – as well as the Chairman of the Coalition Against Corrupt Leaders, Mr. Debo Adeniran; and his Civil Society Network Against Corruption counterpart, Mr. Lanre Suraj.

Attorney-General of the Federation, Mohammed Adoke withdraws N446.3 Billion theft charges against Abacha's son

The Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr. Mohammed Adoke, on Wednesday withdrew the N446.3bn theft charges instituted against Mohammed Abacha, a son of a former of Head of State, the late Gen. Sani Abacha.The Federal Government had preferred the nine counts of theft against Abacha in February 2014.
The prosecution accused Abacha of unlawfully receiving about N446.3bn allegedly stolen from government's coffers between 1995 and 1998.
But Adoke, acting for the Federal Government, on Wednesday, asked Justice Mamman Kolo of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, in Wuse Zone 2, Abuja, on the grounds of "fresh facts" that just emerged concerning the case.

Keyamo, 22 others shortlisted for SAN

The Legal Practitioners' Privileges Committee has shortlisted a Lagos lawyer, Mr. Festus Keyamo, and 22 others for an interview preparatory to the conferment of the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria on them.
The names of the shortlisted candidates was contained in a statement issued on Tuesday by the Registrar of the Supreme Court and Secretary to the LPPC, Mr. Sunday Olorundahunsi.


It added that the interview would take place on July 8 and 9, 2014.

Apart from Keyamo, others shortlisted candidates are,   Gerald-Godwin Ezeuko (Jnr), Samuel Zibiri, Dr. Joshua Olukayode Olatoke, Dr. Adewale Adedamola Olawoyin, Olusola Olaseni Idowu,     Chukwudi Obieze, Kevin Chukwudi Nwufo and Chief Wale Taiwo.
