Education Update as NYSC to start posting corpers to farms

Latest education gist as Brig-Gen. Suleiman Kazaure, the Director General of the National Youth Service Corps ( NYSC ), said on Monday that the scheme would soon begin posting of corps members to farms, The Guardian reports.
Kazaure said this in an interview with newsmen during his official visit to the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp in Sagamu, Ogun.

We gathered that the Minister of Youth Development and Sports, Mr. Solomon Dalong, has said the Federal Government plans to expand the National Youth Service Corps scheme to include skill acquisition and entrepreneurial training.

Dalong said this on Tuesday during an inspection tour of the Lagos State NYSC orientation camp in the Iyana Ipaya area of the state.

Corps member jailed one year for forgery

A National Youth Service Corps member, Helen Bando, has been jailed for one year for attempting to travel to Indian with fake documents.

Convicted and sentenced alongside Helen and equally jailed for one year each are Samuel Obiakor and Segun Alimi, who aided and abetted the first convict in commiting the crime.


Justice Oluwatoyin Ipaye, while handing down the sentence on Monday, said the convicts deserved their punishment notwithstanding their plea bargain because such cases were becoming rampant.

NYSC boss’ son allegedly shot by hired SSS operatives

Preye, who is said to be the son of the Chairman of the Governing Board, National Youth Service Corps, Chief Gordon Bozimo, has been allegedly shot by suspected operatives of the Department of State Security in Bayelsa State.

Preye was said to have been shot in the stomach in Peretimi Hotels located at Imgbi Road, Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, where he had lodged.

The victim alleged that the manager of the hotel hired operatives of the Department of State Security to shoot him.

He said on Sunday that three suspected DSS operatives were personally led by the manager of the hotel to deal with him and finally shoot him in the stomach.

It was learnt that following the incident, the hotel was shut down for about five days after some of the workers were arrested, detained and later released by the police.

Preye, who hails from Bomadi, Delta State, spoke in his hospital bed at the Surgical Ward of the Federal Medical Centre, Yenagoa, where he is lying critically ill.

281 Fake NYSC Members Sacked From Camp

Authorities of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Niger State, northcentral Nigeria, have thrown 281 fake corps members out of the orientation camp.

Mr. Steven Ehoda-adi, the state’s coordinator of NYSC, disclosed this Tuesday while speaking to journalists shortly after the closing ceremony of the 2014 Batch B orientation exercise in Paiko.

He said the 281 fake corps members identified at the state orientation camp were sent out of the camp after they failed to present their call-up letters.
Ehoda-adi said those affected had nothing to show as having qualified for admission into the camp.


According to him, some of them said they lost their letters when they were attacked by armed robbers on their way to Minna, others claimed to have misplaced them, while some presented photocopies of the letters which he said was not acceptable.

Only 3,259 batch B corps members on Tuesday successfully completed their three weeks orientation in the state.

Also, another 230 corps members comprising pregnant and nursing mothers were disallowed from taking part in the normal routine during the three weeks orientation exercise.

NYSC Ready To Stop Ebola Outbreak In Camps - DG

The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier General Johnson Olawumi, has assured Nigerians that the scheme is ready to stop Ebola outbreak in their various camps across the country.

The DG said the scheme has fully equipped all its camp clinics with necessary items for the medical personnel to properly handle any suspected Ebola patient if such case should come up.

NYSC to place corps members on public service salary scale

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) says it is working toward placing corps members on a public service salary scale to stop frequent agitation for a review of their allowances.

Its Director-General, Brig. Gen. Johnson Olawumi, said this at a media chat on Tuesday in Abuja.

He said that already, the scheme was collaborating with the National Salaries and Wages Commission to concretise the proposal.

Olawumi said that the scheme had made series of attempts at the National Assembly to secure an adjustment in the allowances of the corps members, adding that such attempts had been unsuccessful.

He said that the scheme had taken the matter before the wages commission for a solution, adding that the current N19, 800 monthly allowances for corps members was inadequate in view of the economic situation in the country.

The NYSC boss also announced the resuscitation of the Presidential Award to corps members who had excelled in their service to the nation, adding that the 2013 and 2014 editions would hold this year.

“It (award) was instituted in 1974 with the purpose of rewarding corps members that distinguished themselves through selfless service to their host communities.

“The 2012 and 2013 editions of the award will be hosted later in the year along with the 2014 edition and preparations are already in top gear in this regard.’’

On request for corps members’ relocation, Olawumi said that such requests were approved only on marital and health grounds.

Despite Boko Haram killings, Nigerian Government deploys 820 new NYSC corps members to Borno
